To be clear, I’m not American. I think the USA is amongst the most messed up countries in the world. And yes, I’ve been there many times, and I also have extended family from there. I’d want to live in the USA as much as I’d want to live in China.

No, that’s very different. That’s a mega corporation doing horrible things, and they can and will get sued and charged over it.
My example was the actual Chinese government hiding the issue. And this happens all the time in China. There are entire villages where more than half the population has cancer due to contaminated ground water. And the other residents who don’t have cancer can’t do anything because they don’t have any money to deal with it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg with China. Remember, all their news agencies are state controlled and they censor everything coming out of there. There’s no “free press” to report on these kinds of issues. The rest of the world only hears about it when it becomes too big to control.
Another example is kidnapping of children. It’s a big issue in China and we’re only just starting to hear about it because it’s become such a problem. Same thing with the “revenge against society” attacks.
My point is that China is already the dystopia you worry about.

But parents only found this out when they went to hospitals far away, because the local government told the local hospitals to lie about the exposure levels.

For current LLMs there would be a massive gain in energy efficiency if analogue computing was used. Much of the current energy costs come from stimulating what effectively analogue processing on digital hardware. There’s a lot lost in the conversation, or “emulation” of analogue.

I’ve been using “cheap” 43" 4k TVs as my main monitor for over a decade now. I used to go purely with Hisense, they have great colour and PC text clarity, and I could get them most places for $250 CAD. But this year’s model they switched from RGB subpixel layout to BGR, which is tricky to get working cleanly on a computer, even when forcing a BGR layout in the OS. One trick is to just flip the TV upside down (yes it actually works) but it just made the whole physical setup awkward. I went with a Sony recently for significantly more, but the picture quality is fantastic.
Then don’t buy those devices. If you have any excuse as to why you “can’t do that”, then there’s zero point in complaining. I’m not saying your complaints are invalid, and companies should be held accountable and criticised. But as long as people buy privacy violating products, companies will continue to violate privacy.
