Linux@lemmy.world•What are good FLOSS software options for elderly people?English
2·9 days agoIf you are comparing on hardware you are missing the point. It comes with support and a free number they can call if something goes wrong. I don’t live in the same country as FIL so its was 100% worth it to make him happy with his computer.

Pulse of Truth•Let's not call it "tech debt," it's just "mess"English
5·22 days agoI always think of Tech Debt as the work you should do but aren’t doing, usually by management choice.
Stuff like, “we really should refactor this to make it easy to work on” and “we should really clean out the obnoxious deps that we pull in but don’t really need here” and “we really should clean up this function that appears is 6 different places in 2 different versions” and so on.
Essentially anything that would make maintenance and enhancement easier but that you aren’t given the time to do and it just piles up.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Visibility of NFS exportsEnglish
2·1 month agoWhen you add /24 you are exporting to the entire subnet. A single host export looks like this
/srv/nfsv4 192.168.0.10(ro,sync,secure,root_squash,subtree_check,fsid=0)Just leave off the subnet mask.
the name comes from the Bantu word “ubuntu” which loosely translated means, “debian is too hard”

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Can a VPN really protect you on the LAN side?English
9·1 month agoA VPN dos not protect your device. A VPN protects your network traffic because it stops someone on the local network from capturing and manipulating that network traffic. It does not stop someone on the local network from attacking your device directly.

3·1 month agoWhy did you delete your earlier post about plug types?
With the charger I linked you don’t need the original charging bricks for any that use a USB cable, you only need the cable. Including iPad, iPhone, Macbook. It saves even more space.
