Hello, quick question about the interconnection between instances in the fediverse. I now have my account here on kbin.social and I have also created an account on mastodon.social some while ago that I’ve reactivated now since the reddit blackout. I have read that kbin can access mastodon, so do I need a Mastodon account at all? Can I possibly log in to Mastodon through my kbin.social account and use the Mastodon interface when I feel like it?

Also another thing: would this question better fit into the threads section or is it fine here with the microblog?

@Rayspekt I would love to be able to migrate my current mastodon account to bring my followers to my new kbin account. It should be possible in the sense that it works between mastodon servers… I hope, eventually.

@Rayspekt theoretically you do not need your mastodon account at all. your posts here on kbin.social will show up for mastodon users, and vice versa. the ui is different, as you know, and the how the posts show up is a bit different for each.

right now federation isn’t quite working for kbin (but it will be soonish).

the question is probably better suited for a thread than a microblog. threads are more visible on kbin and kinda the “default”. whereas microblogs are kinda the “backwards compatibility” for mastodon. on kbin, microblog posts are kinda 2nd class citizens. while on mastodon, threads are 2nd class citizens. if that makes sense.

@Rayspekt I kind of feel like at work, sometimes I’ll throw out an IM to the team rather than sending an email to everyone - it’s kind of the difference between a post and a microblog here. A “how does this work” type post seems like a microblog situation more than a post situation, though while this whole thing is new I can kind of imagine either place would make sense as more people could benefit from reading from the answer presently.

@Blakerboy777 Yeah i can see that reasoning as well. microblogs are more in-line with a quick comment. whereas threads feel more ‘heavy’. though keep in mind that I think the microblog section of magazines are technically “unofficial” in that your microblog post is essentially a post on your account that is unsorted for most fediverse people and so the expectation is that it might be less related to the kbin magazine you’re posting in. “explicit community” vs “happened to be related to the topic” for example.
