I tried uploading a pic w/ the “upload image” but it didn’t really work, post showed as text-only, so I resorted back to imgur. But is there an alternative we should be using?

I have been primarily using Post Images and using the “direct link” to post to Lemmy. So far this allows for direct download for others, versus needing to go to another website to download the image.

I figure it lowers the hosting load for the Lemmy servers. Plus, if for what ever the Lemmy instance goes down, you could repost your images to another instance.

    I haven’t checked out Pixelfed

Edit: Oh, I didn’t realize Pixelfed is on the Fediverse. That looks promising.

There are lots of websites that offer image serving, all of them with various restrictions — e.g. imgur.com doesn’t do “mature content” any more; catbox.moe is inaccessible in some countries due to censorship; and so forth. It’s probably a good idea to expect people to try lots of different options.
