He was only an OC, and with Trestman & Eberflus alone, we’ve had historically bad HCs, but I still say the last hire of Lovie Smith’s tenure with the Bears is still the worst.
That year, we brought in Brandon Marshall, Martellus Bennett, Alshon Jeffrey, finally had a decent offensive line, and we had Matt Forte along with Jay Cutler.
On the defensive side of the ball, we had a defense that outscored multiple offenses by the halfway point of the season, and was on par to break the franchise record of fewest points allowed.
So what the fuck went wrong, especially since the team was still 10-6? Literally every fucking week, the offense looked like it was getting ready for its first preseason game. I don’t have as fond of memories of Jay Cutler as everyone else, but “fuck it, chuck it” was the only thing he could do all year, because the offense was always slow & vanilla as fuck.
Also, I know it ain’t technically Mike Tice’s fault Major Wright ended Brian Urlacher’s career on a hail mary by the Seahawks, but the fucking Seahawks never should have been in the game enough to where that hail mary was necessary, so, I still blame Mike Tice.
I challenge anyone skeptical of this post to go re-watch any part of the 2012 offense and point to me where Tice actually had something cooking. Even god damn Getsy, Trestman, and Nagy have had little moments of genius, but everything Mike Tice did to that offense was an abomination.
Final thing, and what I’m getting at: while guys like Eberflus and Trestman were horrible hires on so many levels, the absolute worst either of them has done is win a few less games than they should have.
The god damn 2012 Bears had absolutely EVERYTHING for a legit SB run, but they had an OC that kept them from even sniffing the fucking playoffs despite being 10-6. If Lovie hires even an average OC, the Bears are absolutely SB favorites.
John shoop has entered the chat. Anyone remember when Mike Martz got Cutler killed week in and week out AND convinced the coach to trade away Greg Olsen?
Ok
It’s not just the Bears…most teams have a history of ineptitude and bad hires.
Bennet wasn’t brought in until 2013, with Trestman.
John Shoop.
Eberflus has a record of 6 wins and 22 losses, resulting in an embarrassing winning percentage of .176, which is the lowest in Chicago Bears history.
Two words, three syllables: Mel Tucker
End of discussion.
Don’t forget his offensive counterpart Aaron Kromer
People can say what they want about Mike Martz but the guy got us one game away from the super bowl. With small unskilled wide receivers. Friggin Devin Hester was our #1 and Johnny Knox at #2 and Earl Bennett.
and the next year jay was hurt and he left so I never saw it. He pissed jay off and made him play his way and held him accountable
Disagree. Mike Martz wears that crown.
what happened to Bill Lazer? i remember Matt Nagy gave up playcalling to him and we did decent
We get cheap HC’s that either don’t have experience or the rare has been, and then even cheaper coordinators with equally less experience. The list is long.
Flus is 6-20something in two years! Up until yesterday he was 0-9(!) in the division. Find me a worse coach than this. This is Lions and Browns bad, cmon now.
Naw I disagree because Tice had very little expectations and he did a damn good job with that oline you have to remember all the combos he had to put together to achieve a decent Oline. And as an OC he was absolutely bad but he had an identity and a goal as an OC that alone gets him out of the worst hire.
Getsy has no identity. Mel Tucker just wanted the Reebox gear. Eberflus has me wondering if he’s got amnesia but the defense does look better under him. Aaron Kromer doesn’t get the hate that he deserves. Lazor/Nagy/Gase imo are equally terrible
It’s alot of competition
…nope!
Flus would like to challenge that assertion.
