Figured I’d ask here. I have a Walter Payton helmet that I bought in the early 90’s from one of the home shopping networks. I have a general certificate of authenticity, but it’s not numbered or holographed. I have no doubt it’s genuine as Walter was on the show signing a bunch of them when I bought it.

Should I send it in and have it authenticated by Becketts, PSA, or JSA? Is it worthless without? My other concern is that I don’t want it to sell it to a resaler, I want it to go to a fan that will appreciate it. However, I don’t live in Chicago (I’m in Omaha, NE) It’s been in the curio cabinet in my man cave for 30 years. We are looking to downsize and I have to part with some of my collection.

Any suggestions appreciated (event the ones that suggest I wait until they have a winning season, lol)

What would you want for it? Semi interested, but probably out of range.

At this point, I think I’m going to send it to PSA for grading/authentication. Based on what I’m seeing they can go for $2k on up. For that amount of money, I want to make sure that it’s authentic. And without an official certification, someone will want to use that to negotiate the price down.

Thanks for the interest. I can message you once I get it back.

Being a past memorabilia collector, I would spend the money to authenticate it through PSA/JSA. Unfortunately a lot of the collector market doesn’t take random COA’s as gospel (even though this was bought from HSN). The collector market is fairly snobby. If you want to get the most value from the helmet get it authenticated through those one of those two companies before you sell. Good luck.
