I wonder if you’d be able to use pmOS with it
Has it got mainline kernel support? Anyone working on that?
If not, it will be trash in approximately two years and I’d rather save the planet.
I pre-ordered so I read about it in their updates/blog, but they have been actively working on getting everything mainlined.
Search for “Suspend-and-Wakeup on i.MX8MP” and they mention it briefly, they went more in detail about it in previous blogs though: https://mecha.so/blog/mecha-monsoon-update
On top of working with the chip manufacturer to get the cpu side mainlined, they’ve also been working with the contractor firm “Igalia” (who’ve been hired to work on mainlining and upstreaming a bunch of open source projects the past few years) on getting the gpu drivers cleaned up and “mainlined” as well.
Honestly a lot of the work they’ve been doing will benefit other linux on arm projects, especially mobile. I agree with you though, if a project isn’t putting the work in to get everything mainlined, then its not worth considering (atleast to me). I wish Ubuntu touch and sailfish all the luck in the world, and respect the work their doing, but for me its not a option.
Okay, with that context it just got a whole lot more interesting, thank you.
Now I will even have a closer look and consider getting one. :)
They are also active on the fediverse, tho the mention auto complete here isn’t picking uo their handle. It’s funny to see this posted here I was just talking about the Comet to my partner over breakfast today.
I thought the Mecha Comet wasn’t a phone but apparently it has a 4G modem module. I am interested.
DIY Phone
Use the Comet and the Linux stack for calling*, messaging and mobile data as an alternate to your walled and closed smartphone. Contribute to the Linux ecosystem for mobiles.
- No earpiece but the front speaker can do the trick.
Limited to speakerphone, as it stands. Maybe someone will make an attachment that uses the GPIO pins to add an earpiece. Since the GPIO pins are on the bottom guessing that might be a little unwieldy though.
Looks like it’s not fully functional yet. This was one of the most difficult parts dealing with Linux phones.

as far as the speakerphone thing, I’m fine either using Bluetooth or the 3.5 mm headphone jack. But that’s just me. It would be a hassle having to out something just to pick up a call but hopefully someone has a better solution like the one you suggested.
USA? No thanks
That’s a pretty crazy take. Boycott some American mega corps? Yeah ok. Boycott a tiny open source hardware developer? Uhhh. Boycott literally everything made in the USA? Probably involves living in the woods
Well when they attack Canadian Sovereignty, it involves cutting out anything USA made or affiliated…as much as we can.
It actually hasn’t been that restrictive, as there are Canadian businesses that we’ve ignored. The USAs tariffing has actually strengthened our internal economy.
Looks like every other country is also dropping USA based items and projects, because who knows what the current admin will force onto small businesses, or sudden cut off of services.
Yeah I mean good luck, seems like you’d have to choose your battles. That’s a lot to avoid - music, media, tech
Yeah we have done those too. Paramount and Netflix cancelled. Canada has a free strwaming site from the CBC.
I’ve repurposed hardware with Linux to get performance back instead of CPU upgrade for Windows.
Repaired an older car instead of buying new (for many reasons).
Grocery store has brought in more Mexican and overseas products since many people stopped buying USA products.
Staycationing in our province.
So far its been easy.
Wdym?
Mecha Systems is a USA based company. Since USA is actively destroying relations around the globe, and threatening sovereignty , there is no way I’d buy this even though it’s a neat idea.

Ummm
Ummm India is part of America.

na you’re missing something
No no, India inside the US

I love how the Himalayas are in Iowa.
Their web site lists USA first…maybe that’s an American thing. Lol
