Volkswirtschaft is political economics (as opposed to Betriebswirtschaft, business economics) and adding “Lehre” makes it the study of said subject. So “the study of (political) economics” might make sense. Where does “economics of economics” come from?
Btw, pretty sure this image is at least old enough to drink beer in Germany. Not that I’d advocate the use of machine translation for anything that needs reliable results but I’d be surprised if Google Translate was still THIS bad.

Well yes, there are various terms, depending on context etc. We’re trying to precisely differentiate between different types of “economics” though, only one of which is VWL. The fact that English (more often than German) doesn’t make that difference is the reason why that old translation is so cursed.
