it feels like every time they use this, no matter how obvious it is or how many defensive players rush the line, they get 2-3 yards. it seems to me like they could go for 2 and get every time, which could be a huge advantage in the long run of certain games. my brother asked this question last night during the xp after the qb sneak td and neither me or my dad had an answer because it seems like it would work 100%. is there a reason they don’t do this?
Going for 2 every play would lead them to an immediate 4 and out with 2 yards remaining deep in their own territory.
Modify your strategy just a little bit and you have the eagle’s current offensive strategy. They more or less know that they can get 2 yards in a 4th and 2 situation. With something like a 98% success rate. So, knowing you really only have to go 8 yards in 3 plays instead of 10, drastically changes your game plan. They are playing like everything is 4 down territory. It’s an extremely aggressive strategy, and I think it rests mostly on Jason Kelce’s health, but so far they’ve had a lot of success with it. Every coach in the league is laying awake at night trying to dream up ways to counter it. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
