I purchased a 14TB Seagate Expansion drive from Bestbuy Canada. I had basic expectations based on my last Seagate shucking experience that has had me using WD drives for the last while. I was pleasantly surprised to find a SATA Exos 2x14 drive inside, white label, but does include the MACH-2 logo on it. It was a nice surprise to be sure and I may have to grab another while they’re on sale ($239 CAD)

Is this the new standard of what we’ll find in external drives?

I haven’t connected it to my server yet. I’m expecting it to show as a single drive with excellent performance.

    For anyone that purchased and shucked this, what are the power consumption like? Both spindown, idle and active? What about the noise? I currently have a WD Red Plus 14TB and I’m very satisfied with that drive in terms of idle power and noise. Since this is a Exos 2x, the only manual I can find is for 0001 and 0081, the rated power consumption on the manual is quite high (7W idle, 13W active), especially compared to the WD Red, however the shucked model is 0121 and there is no manual for that.

    I bought 2 of the same expansion drives from Costco online and it also came with Exos 2x14 Mach 2 drive! DOM is Aug 2023. I haven’t shucked the other one yet because I read somewhere that a preclear test should be run before shucking. Anyone know how to do that or similar test without unraid? Wish I would have thought of that before shucking this one.

        The shucking process is pretty straightforward. I opened mine up from the side where the seagate logo is located, the only thing is you might want to take your time if you want to avoid breaking the clips. I have broken some on three out of the four sides of the plate.

    It’s fairly likely that the Exos drive you received failed to pass some Seagate test to qualify it as an Exos.

      is that true? I thought they were putting enterprise drives in these enclosures during the parts shortage. I think they are running a custom firmware though because they come up as 14TB single drives and work fine on sata. write speed is almost as fast as a quality sata SSD though, so no complaints here

        Doesn’t matter which drive (enterprise or other) they will all show up as normal 14TB that work on SATA.

        It is a common practice for drive manufacturers to put “seconds” into USB enclosures. Can’t say for sure in your case. You might be able to tell by opening the case and looking at the disk label.

    Can you tell more about shucking these? Did you you run into any issues shucking these drives? I am planning to pick some up tomorrow. I have a decent i5 which i want to make to a file server.
