I asked this sub 2 weeks ago if I should get a MacBook since I’m changing over from a PC. As an English major who wants to major in Technical Communications.

The funny thing is my PC is 3 years old and is now acting up since I’ve been thinking about getting a MacBook. The battery isn’t that great. But it gets the work done. I want to fully transfer over to an Apple ecosystem but the thing is I’m not sure if I should get the 8 GB of RAM or 16 GB of RAM with 256 GB of SSD. Especially since Black Friday and Cyber Monday are this week.

On my iPhone, iPad mini, and PC they’re all 256 GB and I still haven’t run out of storage. (If this gives any insight/help).

Would it be best to get refurbished or go with student education and get the discount?

If you can afford it try to go for 16 GB of Ram. Regarding storage, if you’re at around 50% storage of 256 GB then you could probably stay but could also start thinking about the 512GB. If you’re at around or above 75% storage of the 256 GB then you definitely should consider the 512 SSD. If you have gone 3 years without getting near 75% then you would probably be fine with 256 GB especially if you also do iCloud storage.

If gaming is what you want then I would be careful with getting a Mac. Unless maybe it’s something like the Sims maybe? Check what type of games you want to play is what I’m trying to say because you may be limited. Also the 16 GB of ram may be helpful here depending on what is playable that you also want to play.

Refurbished has worked great for me but only if it comes directly from Apple. Compare student pricing with the refurbished. I would also recommend that you checkout B&H for deals. Especially during Black Friday sales. I got an M1 Max with 64 GB of RAM and 2 TB SSD to replace my old 13” MacBook Pro from 2015. This was a couple months ago and the sales on the older M chips are great.

Thank you for your response. I know my wording isn’t great. I was typing as much as I could before my phone died. I do want to try the Sims game and maybe a bit of Roblox on there. Also, I don’t play games as much as I thought I did. I said “sometimes” cause I tend to only play for like 30 minutes if I’m bored. But I only really play games when my niece or cousin wants me to join in with them (it’s not that often).

I’m new to Macbooks and I was comparing the refurbished to the student educational pricing. I didn’t know which amount of RAM would be the right choice. That’s why I was in a fender bender. I wasn’t sure which option would be the best one to choose.

Also if you don’t mind me asking, what’s B&H?

Thank you for your response again.

B&H is a store, you can google them as “B&H Photo”. Here is their link too if it makes it easier https://www.bhphotovideo.com/

They sell a lot stuff for photo and video like their link suggests which includes computers like Macs. They have very good discounts sometimes
