Trust me, the loss today was just as big of a gut punch for me too. But in reflecting more, this is big for 2 main reasons.
1 - Flus & our staff get fired after 2023: Poles came to Chicago and said we’re gonna take the north and never give it back. Since then, we haven’t won a divisional game (0-9). Poles absolutely cannot seriously move forward into 2024 with while keeping this coaching staff here, without seriously risking his own job. If we win the Lions game today, Flus has legit case to make that we’re turning things around with this staff and they just need more time. This is the breaking point. 2 - Our draft position improves: This loss, paired with the Giants win gives us the ability to trade back from 1, get a massive haul, while still being within striking distance of MHJ. Look at all the 4 win teams - I know the loss hurts now, but in April we’ll be glad.
JF1 looked great, and I also understand that at some point this team needs to learn how to win, but this coaching staff is inept and we’ll get there next year once we clean house. Until then, Bear down.
It was absolutely a win. Fields looked good so even if they don’t keep him he may have traded value and it reinforced the fact the the house needs to be completely cleaned.
I’ve been on the move on from Fields train basically saying if you have the number 1 pick and Fields is on year 4 and you still don’t know he’s your guy then you move on.
However I do think there would be some opportunities that could build an incredible roster. Basically bring in an entirely new coaching staff, use free agency to patch up the holes on defense and the line(center). Then trade back from the number 1 pick to acquire more picks or defensive talent but stay within Harrison Jr range.
Draft Marvin Harrison Jr with Panthers pick then draft Malik Nabers with the Bears pick to pair both with DJ Moore then you run out the best wr trio in the league for the next 5 years. DJ Moore, MHJ, and Nabers would be an absurdly uncoverable with Fields legs mixed and Kmet as a 4th option.
Shit Fields might look like OSU Fields again just because someone is wide open on every play.
Plus, from the haul we get for the #1 pick we have ammo to trade up for our next QB in future drafts if Fields ends up not being the guy.
Interesting about both MHJ and Nabers. 2 elite WRs on rookie contracts is nearly as advantageous as a QB on a rookie contract given how expensive WRs are 🤔
