Hey folks -
I play a LOT of games on my iPhone 15, but I’m curious how the newest gen Apple TV would be for a couch option. Do any of you use this as a gaming device? Can you use a controller with it like you can on the iPhone?

I’d use it for our TV as well but I’m curious how the gaming experience is on it.

it’s great for casual gaming, but not all arcade games are available on the apple tv. Monster Stories for example is only ios.

Some great racing and role playing games work well. We enjoy Sonic Racing and Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

      This.

I can see Apple Arcade on Apple TV as an alternative if somebody already owned an Apple TV, but I wouldn’t buy an Apple TV for gaming…

Grindstone, Alto’s Adventure, and Asphalt 8 are pretty sweet on AppleTV. You’ll get the most out of it if you have an Apple Arcade subscription and a controller.

You can also airplay iPhone/ipad only games like Honkai Star Rail to the big screen.

I have an XBox controller for me and each of my kids. We love to play couch co-op games like crossy castle and Badlands. Hoping they add more couch co-op games to arcade.

i do. i have a nimbus steel series controller and play some casual games. Asphalt 8 is still fun, Crossy Road, and stuff like that.

Can you use a controller with it like you can on the iPhone?

sure can! some of the exact same controllers too.

/u/Bucktroo I’m not a big gamer, but this is my experience. It isn’t a console in the traditional sense (my kids have PS5s, it’s nothing like that). However, the games that are made for the iOS/tvOS environment look fantastic and operate very well on Apple TV. I have a handful that I’ll play for a bit when the urge hits and it works great. I bought a controller from 8-Bit Do that works with both my Apple TV and Windows PC. Makes things even better.

Make sure you buy Lunar Silver Star Story ($10) if you have any interest in JRPGs. It was recently made AppleTV compatible and you can use cloud saves to resume on your phone as needed.

    Chrono Trigger too!

I have a Ps4 and Xbox One (2016) controller, both work well. I used my Windows PC to update the firmware in the Xbox controller.

It’s pretty good! We use it a lot for gaming. We use PS4 controllers with it but I know you can use Xbox controllers too.

Steam Link + Ubisoft + Epic Games + Gog + Retro Arch + Apple Arcade. I’m a light gamer but i tried the following and it’s great. Most games use the Xbox layout but the PlayStation controller works great also.
