So I’ve been looking at the M series MacBooks alongisde of minimal gaming laptops for college, and every single time Apple releases a new chip, there seems to be some minor improvement in how well you can game on macOS. However, this year brought a sizeable GPU uplift from previous years with features such as ray-tracing.

Because of this (and that beautiful Space Black color), I’m here to ask: Is gaming on M series Macs actually becoming viable or getting to a point where in six months, we might see proper optimization?

In 6 months? No. But in a few years? Maybe. What Apple needs to do is heavily invest in gaming like they do for TV content. They need developers on board to be able to port games onto MacOS. There are some games that run well on Macs, but not many. The M3 series will be slightly better at running those games than M2 or M1 but not by much. I don’t think there are any games that take advantage of ray tracing on the new Macs.
