I’m in Canada where I think things are different then other countries for phone plans. I have a super cheap plan right now for $50 a month which is no longer available if I upgrade my device through any provider. I’ve never done it before but I was wondering if I buy my phone outright can I simply put my old SIM card in the new phone and still only pay $50 for my plan??
It may be a super stupid question or not, I’m not sure. But I’ve never heard of any of my friends doing this but that being said I can’t see why it wouldn’t work?
Thanks for the advice!
The answer depends on the phone you get. MAKE SURE that the new iPhone you get has a SIM Card tray and isn’t just usable with eSIM’s. The iPhone 15 series is only compatible with eSIM’s, for example.
If you got the new iPhone from Apple it will be unlocked, if not you need to make sure it is unlocked first.
Not sure about Canada but when we traveled from the US to Ireland we bought temporary sims there. Popped our US sims out, popped the Irish sims in and we instantly had service with the Irish carrier.
So barring any specific carrier shenanigans I would expect your existing service to “just work” in the new phone. Not being from Canada though I personally would wait for some locals to chime in.
You can buy your phone from your provider, directly from the manufacturer, or a retail electronics company then pop your old SIM card in the new one. You should also have no problem switching to E-SIM if you prefer to go that way. I haven’t bought one through a carrier since the government required phones to be sold without a carrier lock. I think I’ve had three different phones since the last time I made any changes to my plan. I’ll be hanging on to my $43 /month plan as long as it fits my needs.
I cant help with this but I’m in shock that $50 a month is seen as cheap for a sim plan. Im here with my £15 a month sim in the UK. I know thats only like £30 ish but yeah im in shock
