Do teams not use the same 11 players on field goal blocks for every play?

I can understand how you get 12 players on defense because someone was confused about what package you’re running, but if you’re the 12th guy on special teams shouldn’t you stop and think “Hey, I’m not usually out here for these plays, maybe I’m an extra?”

It’s interesting that the Broncos pulled off the “fast switch FG” twice in a game. The irony here is, Buffalo got the worst case scenario:

    • while a FG block isn’t impossible, it’s quite unlikely
    • have too many men on the field
    • first FG misses, second post-penalty makes
    • game was literally win or lose, a FG miss doesn’t send you into OT tied up.

You’d think having previously executed having the right guess out there in that scenario would’ve helped.
