Hi folks,

I’ve finally set up a proper homelab after years of running a simple *arr and jellyfin set up from a pi.

My setup is as follows:

Sff PC running proxmox on a 258gb ssd for the OS.

I have 1x windows vm which I’ve done a USB pass through for a yottamaster 5 Bay hardware raid enclosure that has 5x 8tb disks in raid 5.

I have 1x 8tb external drive that has a “copy” of 7.1tb of media that is at my friend’s house that is from a month ago.

Now, what is my best way forward?

The raid array only has around 8tb of disk space used. I have signed up for backblaze but as I’m on starlink, this will take a few months to backup everything. I am keenly aware that raid is not a backup and want to make sure I can take care of things as my media collection grows.

Can I compress my media to back it up to a separate drive?

I’m aware of 3-2-1 only by name but not sure what is the best way to proceed in my current circumstances.

Get another local machine (NAS and etc) and use it as repository for your backups. Other option is simply to get external drive and back everything up to it.

So essentially a nuc and another NAS? would it matter if that NAS was also in raid 5?
