Nominative determinism aside, that’s Greek tragedy levels of sad. In a better world they’d not have been warped by chuddery to the point they felt they had to do this.

The really sad thing is, they probably would have been accepted by the community still.

Conservative communities can be vicious if you’re an lgbt teen, but are surprisingly accepting when it’s a respected member of the community that they’d have to ostracise and the outing is being done by some asshole outsider rag.

EDIT: changed to neutral gender pronouns since we don’t know their internal identity.

It’s hard to know. Sometimes they’ll bend over backwards to support someone they’ve always considered part of the family, change their minds ot make an exception for one of their own, but other times even the “supportive” people are only supportive insofar that they’ll forgive you if you stop being queer. They called her actions “unbiblical” so who knows. She was being pursued by cops in the end, so that probably escalated matters.

Being chased by an armed gang that hates the thing you’re having a mental crisis with rarely helps matters.

I like to think there’s enough of a vestige of Alabama Communalism left to make them embrace him, but it’s hard to know as you say.
