I’ve just completed moving lemmy.ca and piefed.ca away from using Cloudflare’s proxy service, this means traffic now comes directly from our server instead of being routed through any US based companies. Pixelfed.ca is still on deflect.ca for the moment.

Note that in order to avoid making too many major changes at once, our DNS is still hosted by cloudflare. I’ll be moving that away from them later this week
Since this change took effect on piefed.ca, I have been occasionally running into errors. It lasts for minutes or maybe hours (I have not analyzed it that closely).
This is from earlier this morning (8:20 CST). piefed.ca loaded ok, but clicking into a post I got this error (ignore the address bar, Firefox doesn’t show the whole URL).
Yeah 😢 , my phone went off and woke me up this morning. It’s also represented on https://status.fedecan.ca/
I did a whack of tuning on Sunday, banning bots and adding the second piefed server back in. That seems to have mostly stabilized lemmy, but piefed is a little more rocky still. May need to give me to the end of the long weekend to try to things back close to 100% uptime.
I am missing cloudflare a little now 😂

Moving to non US companies seems like a good thing these days. As much as I do developer work I’m not overly knowledgeable on these types of services especially when they need to scale up to a level needed for this, but awesome to hear.
Thank you SO much for this! It may seem like a small step, but its an incredibly ambitious leap for a small project like Fedecan to make do without Cloudflare

what provider do you use to host the actual instance on?
been looking for a good one for some publicly facing services, went with xenyth, seems alright but they charge in USD despite being canadian
We own our own hardware in a datacenter, so I can’t help =)
Sasktel apparently does some form of cloud infrastructure now, haven’t actually looked into it but they are looking to expand their customer base to across Canada
I use Servarica out of Montreal but I checked my invoices and it says USD as well
If you want to manage a VPS, I have been happy with OVH. Very cheap, hosted in Montreal. Not Canadian, but European owned.

What happened to deflect.ca? Was it just Cloudflare under the covers?
Performance wasn’t great since their nodes are East Coast and our server is west coast.
Did you use their WAF?
