I like the idea of this website, but I think it’s missing the mark.

Let’s look at music streaming. First, it doesn’t list Spotify as one of the incumbents. Interesting choice considering they are the most popular service by far. But that’s neither here nor there.

We go to the alternatives listed. Tidal is a subsidiary of Block. Subscribing to Tidal is giving money to owner and CEO Jack Dorsey. With an estimated net worth of $5.9 billion, he is worth more than double Tim Cook. Seems like we’re better off just sticking with Apple Music.

Deezer is owned primarily by Access Industries, who has a 98% stake in Warner Music Group, and Orange Group, a €100 billion telecom.

Spotify is listed as an alternative. Sundar Pichai of Google has an estimated worth of $1.6 billion. Daniel Ek of Spotify is worth over $8 billion.

I’m not sure that these alternatives are accomplishing the mission in the body of your post.

You literally picked the most controversial section, which has limited, uncompromised options.

      However:

      • all of these facts you listed are noted against each of the company’s profiles.

      • Qobuz is the top of the recommended list

      • Spotify isn’t recommended and educates people as to why. I’ve found this way more effective in informing people and many have since moved.

You make a good point though on the scale of wealth of the ownership between Access and Block. I’ll look at highlighting this fact more.

The point is that people are driven by many different factors. Not here to be the arbitrator of the “best” alternatives. Rather highlight the issues and get people using better tech. E.g. anti AI advocates will shout that X company should be removed, BDS advocates say Y, Buy European says Z…

If you feel that I haven’t flagged something that people should know, then please highlight it and I’ll add it against their profile.

I have to say it’s been so thoroughly disappointing and heartbreaking watching these tech guys go down exactly the same path as other big business, the ones they were all talking shit about 20 years ago, saying they were going to do things differently, respecting their employees, lots of perks. I really thought work culture was going to change. Well, shame on me of course, because they’re the same assholes as always.
