Former NHL star Johnson, 29, suffered a gash to his throat in the freak accident, according to witnesses.
The game between his new team the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers had to be abandoned.
Eye witnesses says players from both teams formed a ring around Johnson as apparently there was quite a lot of blood.
Around 8,000 fans are believed to have witnessed the horror collision between the two players at Utilita Arena Sheffield.
Honestly throat guards should be mandated. The cost is worth the gain.
Yeah this happened to Richard Zednik some time ago. It was pretty freaky to see the blood gush from his neck.
Happened to Clint Malarchuk many years ago. His whole story is fascinating and I’ve heard his book is a good read.
That video still haunts me. He is VERY lucky to be alive.
Morgan Barron (Wpg Jets) got 75 stitches in April.
But the neck getting slashed has got to be a player’s worst nightmare.
Hope he’s ok. 🤞
Yikes. Is there any update on his condition?
He died :(
Edit:
I hope these sources appease everyone seeking sources

Do you have a source for that? I saw some people saying this, but never a source to go with it, just speculation.
Edit: yes, this has been confirmed. The comments asking for sources were from before any confirmation could be found.
I think we should wait for some form of confirmation on that one before we start rushing to say someone has died.
SKATE HORROR Adam Johnson dead: Tragedy as Nottingham Panthers ice hockey player, 29, dies after skate blade ‘slashed his throat’
Yeah, I could see neck guards becoming required equipment after this. Safety regulations are built on blood

There’s a video circulating, I’d advise anyone to avoid watching it.
I looked it up. I’ve seen lots of genuinely horrifying things on the internet, and this tops all of it for me. I fully regret seeking it out.
I just ordered a neck guard for my beer league games.
Shit that’s scary and always a fear of mine when watching hockey. Hope everything is ok, it’s not a common injury but it’s happened to a few players over the years and they’ve pulled through
