I’m currently facing a decision regarding the choice of a CPU for my home lab and NAS, with two options available at an identical price point. One option is a high-core count Xeon CPU, while the other is a newer generation Xeon CPU with fewer cores.

I’ve conducted some research on CPU Boss, which suggests that the newer generation CPU might be the better choice due to its improved power efficiency and architectural advancements.

Given my time constraints, I kindly seek recommendations from this community to help me make a swift and informed decision. Your timely input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Since you own an x99, I’d say go higher if you’re able to. 2698v4 chips dropped a lot in price since when I got them and my Gigabyte board took that and 128GB ECC just fine. Though they do eat 130-150w.
