hi all, I am from the UK and have my BT hub in bridge mode so i can use my pfsense router. this works well but with some of the current contriversy around pfsense i am looking to give opnsense a try. Now naturally i am looking to retain internet access during this time (and so is my partner) so i would like to use my spare tp link archer vr600 as a spare box for when my pfsense is out of action. essentially i want to set it up in such a way that when i unplug the pfsense router i can drop in this box and everything will pick up where it left off. already have an AP so i can disable wifi on the box.

how would i go about setting this up whilst pfsense is still running? TIA

Setup the 2nd router identical to the first - unplug the old one and move it to the new box. If everything is setup correctly there will just be a slight blip.

Without connection tracking or VRRP there’s no way to have it be seamless.

Also consider if you have any devices on dhcp reserved addresses or any port forwarding you would have to configure them on the opn sense otherwise local lan IPs will change. This may or may not be a problem depending if you have fixed local IPs in dhcp or port forwarding.
