Il 16 febbraio 1984 IBM presenta l’IBM 5155 Portable Personal Computer, tra i primi PC “portatili” compatibili IBM. Basato su Intel 8088 a 4,77 MHz, con 256 KB di RAM, monitor ambra da 9", floppy 5,25" e PC DOS 2.1. Pesava 30 kg e costava 2.795 dollari: più trasportabile che portatile, anticipò i futuri laptop.
