That sounds a lot like C-PTSD to me.

I don’t think there’s a hypothetical point of no return though, with time and support people can recover from a lot.

You permanently become more neurotic if you get traumatized early in childhood, it may damage your memory and emotional control too.

Of course, you can still become a fairly functional human being even then, and the brain is fairly plastic (permanent is relative).

    • You permanently become more neurotic if you get traumatized early in childhood

      Oh noes…

      searches Wikipedia

Highly neurotic people have more trouble coping with stressful events, are more likely to insult or lash out at others, and are more likely to interpret ordinary situations (like minor frustrations) as hopelessly difficult.

      Oh that’s me

      I had a traumatic incident at 6 years old… 🙃

I don’t know, but I do know that there comes a point where you no longer have enough space mentally to stand and do the work you need to do. I suspect that there is a point where someone’s story of suffering consumes them so totally that even a very qualified therapist, or maybe the Buddha himself, couldn’t pull that person back from the brink. That power to heal has to come from inside, and at some point that person may just fully believe that the power is spent. It can’t be spent in truth, but that doesn’t matter if the belief exists that it is spent.

All things that live on this planet, and especially humans, have an incredible capacity for healing. Not that the things which happen to you don’t change you, but healing is always possible (maybe even inevitable) when you get away from whats doing you damage.
