The magnitude 6 tremor occurred at 9:51 p.m. local time on Saturday (2:51 a.m. GMT on Sunday), with its epicenter off the coast of the city of Chimbote, in the Áncash region, and was also felt in Lima and Cajamarca, Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Amazonas, San Martín, Junín, Pasco, Huánuco, and Ucayali.

The National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) stated in its latest report that, in addition to the injuries, the earthquake caused damage to homes, roads, health facilities, businesses, and electrical power, mainly in Áncash and La Libertad.

An hour later, an aftershock occurred in the same area, reaching a magnitude of 4.1, while at 0:17 hours on Sunday (05:17 GMT), another movement of magnitude 4.3 was recorded, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

During the morning of this Sunday, a new movement of magnitude 4.8 was felt in Lima, which did not cause damage but was the fourth in a series of earthquakes reported since Friday night in the Peruvian capital.

Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where more than 80% of the world’s seismic activity is recorded, due to the collision of the Pacific tectonic plate with the Nazca plate, on the southern coast.

The last devastating earthquake in the country occurred in August 2007 in the southern region of Ica, where it reached a magnitude of 7.9 and left about 500 dead and millions in economic losses.
