“Castellane”, not “Spanish”
When the true conquerors of this continent arrived (and they are Iberians, not any European), their political organization was called ‘Reino de Castilla’ (Kingdom of Castilla). They had given to the continent the language. Including in USA many people speak in this language everyday (for example, Florida and Texas).
The fragility of Kingdom of Castilla comes from its position in Iberia: a multilanguage and a multikingdom population. Here there was not a Spain, this country is a recent fact. Castilla conquered the other kingdoms, like Galicia, Euskadi and Cataluña, requiring the use of Castellane language.
More problems: Kings and Queens were related to territorial possesions. They couldn’t migrate to the conquered continent and keep the right to rule, it was a complex issue to solve but probably a more secure path (like Napoleon wars had shown us).
Then, when you say ‘spanish’ (the name of new country) to reference our language, you’re wrong. Our language is castellane and ever I was always taught on that way. Schools teach ‘castellane’, not ‘spanish’. And don’t believe that it’s against Spain (called ‘the motherland’). Generally, we are on good terms with Spain.
The right word in english could be castilian.

“Castellano”, no “Español”
Cuando los verdaderos conquistadores de este continente llegaron (y eran ibéricos, no cualquier europeo), su organización política se llamaba ‘Reino de Castilla’. Ellos le dieron al continente el idioma. Incluso en EE. UU., mucha gente habla este idioma a diario (por ejemplo, en Florida y Texas).
La fragilidad del Reino de Castilla proviene de su posición en Iberia: una población multilingüe y multireino. Aquí no existía España, este país es un hecho reciente. Castilla conquistó a los otros reinos, como Galicia, Euskadi y Cataluña, requiriendo el uso del idioma castellano.
Más problemas: los reyes y las reinas estaban relacionados con posesiones territoriales. No podían migrar al continente conquistado y mantener el derecho a gobernar, era un asunto complejo de resolver, pero probablemente un camino más seguro (como las guerras napoleónicas nos han demostrado).
Entonces, cuando dices ‘español’ (el nombre de un país nuevo) para referirte a nuestro idioma, estás equivocado. Nuestro idioma es castellano y siempre me lo enseñaron así. Las escuelas enseñan ‘castellano’, no ‘español’. Y no creas que esto va en contra de España (llamada ‘la madre patria’). Generalmente, estamos en buenos términos con España.
