My closest encounter was a fox at three paces.

Turn and draw? 3 paces is a little close I think.

No need, the fox ran away. I actually saw it again later that day, but from a larger distance.

I know deer are generally pretty skittish, and not aggressive towards people, but would there ever be a situation where someone should be worried about getting gored by those antlers if you’re too close?

I don’t know. I have been walking these woods for 30 years and all throughout my life the deers have been here roaming and people feed them almost daily. They are really super friendly and not scared at all of people.

From what I’ve heard, wild animals that lose their fear of humans are much more dangerous than ones who aren’t used to us.

They have much much more interactions with humans and consequently also more negative interactions. And stupid humans will do stupid things like slapping an animal or randomly start screaming right next to an animal. So yes.

Good to know… I just look at those antlers and my first instinct is “nope,” even though I know that they’re usually pretty gentle. They’re still wild animals, and can do unpredictable things.

I’m based in Sweden but the deer might as well be Japanese, who knows?

There’s only 2 things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.

This is really neat mate, thanks for sharing this! Gotta love being outside, in the wilderness, being close to nature is something special.
