I need help, I only play MInecraft 1.8.9 and it looks like this on every distro I use, with any launcher, this screenshot it taken on Arch Linux with LXDE and Prism Launcher. (on windows it works btw)
- Specs:
- OS : Arch Linux
- GPU : Nvidia 1660 Super
- CPU : Ryzen 5 2600 3.400GHz
- RAM : 8 GB
Just launched 1.8.9 with the Prism Launcher and it looks fine for me. (I’m using Kubuntu 22.04.3 LTS)
Maybe it’s a java issue? Old Minecraft uses java 8, maybe try reinstalling it and seeing if that works. Best of luck!
What Java version do you have? They switched to a much newer version of Java at some point, maybe the old versions of Minecraft are trying to use the new Java and flipping out?
On arch the default java environment can be checked with
archlinux-java status
ifarchlinux-java-run
is installedIt is also dependent on how they’ve installed Prism, if through the Flatpak it bundles its own Java versions, Java 8 is included and can just be selected in the settings specifically for that instance
I think Minecraft launchers have their own setting for Java versions but I have no clue which one they select and I am almost certain Java 8 (which as far as I remember was the version for that Minecraft version) won’t be the Arch Linux default.
As others have been saying, it’s most likely a Java issue.
Make sure to install (or reinstall) Java8 and make sure it’s selected in the prism launcher for use under v1.8.9 specifically. That way, you can continue to play using Java17 on recent versions a bit simpler than having to constantly swap Java versions
i’ve had that before, it’s probably a java version issue
-
install
jre8-openjdk
with pacman -
set java version for 1.8.9 to java 8, this can be done in instance settings depending on the launcher. prism launcher can auto-detect java
old minecraft versions use java 8, newer ones use java 17

Looks like a graphics driver issue. Are you using the proprietary Nvidia drivers or Nouveau?
Whats nouveau?
unofficial open source nvidia drivers
That sounds cool, gotta look into that
You don’t want to unless you’re just planning on running a web browser or word processor or something, they’re significantly buggier and massively slower than the proprietary driver, and especially so on newer cards.
Oh, is there any open source alternative?
Please also mention that the reason the Nouveau is slow is not because of incompetence rather it is because nvidia only allows drivers signed by them to be able the change clocks of their GPUs(at least the fairly modern ones) and hence Nouveau can only run the GPU at base clock. This is being rectified now(after like almost a decade iirc) as nvidia is adding their proprietary firmware to the kernal which will then allow Nouveau to control the GPU clockspeed. Also NVK is being developed to provide vulkan support for nvidia GPUs through the open source driver(Nouveau)
I like the implication that there is some playability, being “basically” unplayable instead of “totally” unplayable.
I guess the screenshot still kind of looks like Minecraft?
I played similar to that, i mean you can still see players so pvp kind of works? Tho it changed the textures weirdly depending on what player skin loaded last and if they have a migrator cape. So pvp does still work, kind of?
I actually ran into this issue just yesterday. Switching my java installation fixed it.
especially the minecraft version which is known for having font issues.
I own several copies of bedrock but none of java. Can I download and play these old java versions without needing to buy a new copy?
@nucleative If one of those copies you own is on the Microsoft Store for Windows 10/11, you should already own the Java edition as well, courtesy of Microsoft themselves. Just open the official launcher (or a custom, community launcher like MultiMC, Modrinth App or Prism Launcher) and select the version you wanna play
This totally works, thanks for the tip!
that’s so interesting, it’s trying to pull the texture for the minecraft logo but instead gets the hotbar texture. must be some sort of issue with java, maybe try reinstalling it?
Are we calling 1.8.9 old now?
I mean it has been out for over 7 years now. https://howoldisminecraft189.today/
What’s the story behind this domain? I checked to see if maybe someone had made one for every Minecraft version, but no, 1.8.9 is singled out for some reason. Edit: Okay 1.7.10 also exists, I’m guessing some others do too. 1.6.4 doesn’t, that was the first one I checked.
Well, the game was stuck on 1.8 longer than any other version especially if you also consider all the servers that refused to switch for years because Mojang didn’t do a especially good job with the new combat system!
I know 1.7.10, 1.8.9, and 1.12.2 exist. I’m not sure the story behind them, I just know they are common versions people like to play still. 1.8.9 for PvP and Hypixel and 1.12.2 for 2b2t. I’m not sure about 1.7.10 though.
Fuck, it’s still rare but at times I do feel kind of old!
If I had to guess I would blaim that on Java, maybe try to reinstall Java 8 and make sure it’s actually selected in the launcher rather than a newer version!
Which version of prism? The flatpak or the arch/aur version?
Use the multimc5 client, also maybe try a different jdk
That one is pretty much dead due to a hostile takeover. People moved to polymc, the after the Dev went crazy and alienated people, they moved to prism launcher. That’s where theajority of the Multi/PolyMC Devs are now.
What happend to it?
Multimc devs refuse to let anyone else compile/provide packaging scripts for their application. Their own Linux packages installs into /home and can’t be cleanly uninstalled. They also deliberately broke the compile process by removing key files from their git repo. When confronted about it, they decided to threaten to sue the AUR maintainer for trademark infringement on their discord instead.
What a bunch of weirdos.
So alongside the part about mulitimc that StarDreamer said regarding the AUR and packaging attacks.
After the fork to PolyMC the maintainer of PolyMC decided to make it political. He was trying his best to prevent a specific clarification to an inclusivity clause in its contributors guidelines or whatever it’s called. (From “everyone” to something along the lines of “everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation and preference”) A huge argument broke out, and he went full right wing and just kicked all the opposing people off the project, spitting right wing “wokeism” rhetoric the whole time.
People realised what was happening and left the project for prism launcher with a new maintainer who had been kicked as a result of the maintainers rampage and need to make it intensely political over what was essentially a minor issue: wether or not to clarify the word “everyone”
As someone who was watching from the sidelines, It really was a circus in both the mulitimc and the PolyMC cases.
Thanks for the help, I found a fix if anyone is interested. Just write
__GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=0
on /etc/environment
