Summary
A family with four U.S. citizen children was deported to Mexico last month, including a 10-year-old girl recovering from brain surgery.
The Texas Civil Rights Project filed a complaint alleging CBP denied medical care to the girl and detained U.S. citizen children “in deplorable conditions” before removing them to Mexico “where their lives are in peril.”
The parents, who were seeking T visas as human trafficking victims, were arrested at an immigration checkpoint while traveling for their daughter’s medical care.
Border czar Tom Homan has stated “families can be deported together” regardless of citizenship status.
I don’t want to read news about America any more, it’s just too depressing.
Pick your battles, I’m on the other side of the world.
This is something the American public need to do for themselves.
Fair enough. Wish us luck!
i just filter out the larger news instances and go about my day. it’s been pleasant besides the occasional “NINE MILLION PEOPLE WERE TELEPORTED INSTANTLY TO A VOLCANO” level of insanity stories like this one. least that’s one easy thing that reddit can’t do.
Why try to do anything so this doesn’t happen when it’s easier to dig your head in the sand 🙃
The United States is not going to magically get better because one singular person in Florida disagrees with everything.
every peaceful protest against this is illegally broken up and police regularly beat protesters half to death with zero repercussions, the current president calls protesters terrorists and regularly muses about having judges thrown in jail, the supreme court has pretty much admitted they can do whatever they want and every single one of them is public about them being bought out.
the original comment was saying how depressing the news cycle is and I commented how I deal with it. this isn’t a lala land where people can suddenly change everything. this is exactly how the government is going to be for the next four years so I don’t understand the point of pretending anyone, let alone a lower middle class person living psycheck to psycheck has any effect over it.
feel free to tell me in detail what you’ve done protest wise this week if you don’t agree and has had a substantial impact. I’ve donated to a few charities that are struggling with food and supply issues in my area and they’ve been appreciative of it but that’s currently all I can do.
I mean it sure would do more than pretending it’s not happening - but I get it - most Germans preferred to pretend they couldn’t smell the smoke either.
And again you don’t even have to risk your own safety by protesting - you could at least join a local community organizing group to help people most affected.
I’m sure you may think one person can’t make a difference but I can guarantee that even a single person more that’s helping out with mutual aid would be met with appreciation anywhere. Still good on you for financing charities - that is usually the very first step.
Also this isn’t a sprint - it’s a marathon - expecting protests now to have any immediate impact is just setting you up for failure - these fights have been fought for generations - so lock in and get ready to resist not just these 4 but the next 40 years.
And sorry if this feels overwhelming and you don’t think you have the capacity - but even doing 1 day of volunteering a month is a good starting point.

I’m a minority. Comparing someone to Nazi citizens ignoring the Jewish population getting murdered is a tone deaf thing to say.

I’ve donated and I have severe pain that makes me unable to be outside for more than a few hours. I don’t know what more I could reasonably do without injury.

Thank you.

I don’t expect protests to have results because peaceful protesting isn’t taken seriously. The problem with protesting is how the government weaponized it against people and how blatantly evil they are. There’s videos in the BLM riots of cops shooting up the court house of people watching the riots and the law said they were perfectly fine to do so.
I don’t really think protesting works because modern America doesn’t need to hide how corrupt it is anymore. There’s corruption so bad the LAPD police department keeps trying to edit it out of Wikipedia. I had a similar conversation with someone xenophobic on Reddit who kept chastising “All Americans because they’re responsible” when I did everything correct. Told my friends to vote for her. Organized meetups which was very insanely hard to do in Florida because of my back issues, and people still didn’t give a shit.
I don’t really know what else I’m expected to do when most of it doesn’t work.

I think this is true to an extent. I think everyone should talk about injustices but it’s significantly harder in the modern world where most people make a game out of how many trans people they can make miserable or how many minorities they can offend. It’s incredibly demoralizing and I left reddit primarily because I kept getting blamed for “inaction” at the election when I did everything right, but that still wasn’t good enough. I get what you mean, really, I do. But it’s a lot harder to make a difference especially when your country is actively erasing your rights and other people similar around you don’t seem to give a shit.
Why did you come to a news focused community to tell us all that?
As much as Americans refuse to believe it, news does occur outside of the USA as well.
Homan said it would be up to the parents to decide whether to depart the U.S. together or leave their children behind.
Monster.
The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, has said “families can be deported together” regardless of status. Homan said it would be up to the parents to decide whether to depart the U.S. together or leave their children behind. In this case, the parents took their children with them so the family could stay together.
That seems like a blame shifting assumption to me. Did they have a legal guardian set up for her with solid US residency before they were blindsided with all of this? Because it’s not like they could just make one of those up on the spot, even if they had a person in mind unless that person already had filed and approved legal paperwork there would have been all sorts of options for government agents to take custody of her and send her off into CPS systems.
