The Indian state of West Bengal passed a law seeking the death penalty for rapists in the wake of a doctor’s brutal rape and murder.

Death penalties are never the answer. The goal of the criminal system to be to rehabilitate criminals so they dont offend again, or, if that’s impossible, to separate them from society. Not some archaic sense of revenge or ‘justice’.
Furthermore, it hasn’t shown to be more effective as a deterrent than a prison sentence.
Additionally, it encourages fugitive murderers to commit more murders in order to escape. After all, one can only get executed once, and trying to save one’s life provides ample motivation for murder.
If you are any familiar with Indian politics, you will know how rapists that served life sentence are garlanded after release. Death sentence is way better than seeing rapists get garlanded or even worse promoted in politics.
Also your first comment is wrong. If one isn’t alive, there’s 0 chance they repeat the crime. So there is a valid proof of it.
Very easy to say when you don’t live here and just shows your ignorance.
This march in India two lovers eloped after marriage refusal from their parents. The girls father gang raped the guys sister to revenge. He did it with his brother nephew and a friend. Maybe you have some sick fetish of walking along people like this but most don’t. This is just one heinous example. Just so you know most perpetrators in India do it cause they know they can roam freely after or get bail in a few years or if they are politically affiliated, even days. Or if they belong to upper caste, the police themselves will burn the evidence and the dalit victim themselves.
It’s not about knowledge of what exactly was the crime. What you didn’t get was that when I said death penalties were never the answer, I actually meant it. Not ‘death penalties are too bad for this crime, but if it’s bad enough, they’re the answer’. Death penalties are never the answer, regardless of how heinous the crime. If the person can’t be rehabilitated, they should be separated from society so they’re not a danger, but your comment is all about revenge, paying these people back, which I already said should not be the goal.
Well yes. I think death penalty is about providing justice to the victim and scaring potential rapists. If they know they will be “safe” after committing the crime, trust me they will do it, and that’s why they are doing it to begin with in India.
I don’t care about your goals. The goal is to stop potential rapists, not provide them a safe haven. What a weird take. Idk where you are from but we don’t call prison time as confinement or isolation. It’s called punishment in the constitution, so yes revenge is the goal.
I’m not from the Nordic countries, which are the best at ‘rehabilitation, not revenge’, though I’d like to be, I’m glad I’m not from somewhere as bad as America either.
This is the first article about this that I’ve seen mention that they arrested someone the next day.
In India, perpetrators are usually arrested for protection from the mobs and quite release than for justice.

India has a culture issue not a law issue. Stamp out misogyny and you’ll reduce rape. All this will do is make rapist more violent as they’ll do more to not get caught.
Tougher crimes for sexual violence is definitely warranted (not death penalty though), and not just in India. But like you said, that alone won’t solve the issue as it’s engrained in the culture. The culture that is promoted by PM Modi and his party though, so any real changes are unlikely.
