Pro-Russian hackers are continuing to hit targets in Ukraine amid a counteroffensive aimed at reclaiming territory held by Russian forces in what Ukrainian officials and researchers describe as an intense period of network operations as the conflict heats up.
“The activity is still very high,” said Victor Zhora, a top Ukrainian cybersecurity official told CyberScoop via online chat Thursday.
Zhora, the deputy chairman of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, which is responsible for the defense of Ukrainian government systems, said that pro-Russian hackers are focused on Ukrainian service providers, media and critical infrastructure, as well as collecting data from government networks. Zhora said his team is expecting the pace of pro-Russian operations to pick up.
Nowadays one has to wonder what “pro-russian” actually is. Certainly not good for russia to keep this war going. For Russia, it’d be best if that war ends, sooner rather then later. If the Russians where to declare an end to hostilities now there might be a potential territorial gain for russia. There are some places in the occupied regions with a lot of russians living there who might vote to remain a puppet state, erm, “independent country” allied with russia.
Dunno how many would actually vote to be “independent” but there might be some people.
Would still be better then to be eventually chased out by the ukranians.
Some time ago i figured the russian comissars who are tasked to shoot at people who show “cowardice before the enemy” or some shit like that would need to be prosecuted. By the russians.
Seeing the gear and training some of these people where tossed into the war zone with some of the russian soldiers might get to thinking that going over to the ukranian’s place, let themselves be captured and then eating ukranian rations until the end of the war is the most pressure they could possibly apply to the ukranian enemy.
Now a commissar attempting to prevent that from happening would have to answer some questions. Instead of costing the ukranians Food for hundreds of days he used up a russian pistol round. Good job, comrade commissar!.
Difficult to pin down what is actually “pro”- russian is my point.
As for the hackers, if they where to remotely disable a Facility that was about to fall into the enemy’s hands so the Ukranians can’t use that Facility they might very well end up being scapegoats, for they disabled a Facility that had been in the hands of the russians. May have been in the hands of the russians for about 40 seconds but russian propaganda doesn’t care much about such minute details…
