The weekend, and the rain, has arrived.

What are we all up to? Mourning the lack of sun? Happy for the rain? Still playing Tears of the Kingdom with the curtains closed?

We’ve got the local village “carnival” today, complete with overpriced fair in the park afterwards. I usually try to ignore it because I’m a grumpy old sod, but my eldest is walking in it with school so I have to be enthusiastic.

Hey, have fun in Manchester! You might be glad to know, I’m looking out my window and it’s a bit overcast but doesn’t feel rainy yet.

The Apollo’s a great venue but I’m always disappointed by the lack of pubs nearby.

Currently out walking the dog in the fields. The sun’s come out, the petrichor is in full swing, it’s a lovely morning. We’ve seen a green woodpecker. Edit: dog rolled in fox poo. Boo

Off to a party to see some old friends later. Yay.

Performing Carmina Burana with my choir this evening which should be fun. I am knackered though after an overnight jaunt to London so hoping I can sleep most of Sunday

No rain here as of yet, and I don’t mean to be miserable about the sun but we really need some rain!

Also off to the library to do crafts and get books out this morning, not sure what else today brings maybe prep for father’s day tomorrow.

    What are you up to?

Ooh what kind of crafts? Our library used to have a knit and natter, but it only happened at like 10am on a Wednesday so effectively banned working-age folks. And now even that is gone. Bah.

It’s a shame when there aren’t outside of working time options. I often wonder when we are supposed to engage with all this stuff?

We have a kids craft on a Saturday at the library, my kid is currently making a paper fish. We take a lot of paper craft stuff home with us!

You might be able to find a knit and natter group on Facebook, I know there are some around us that do the post box toppers.

Honestly I made one friend through Ravelry years ago, and that seems to be about it around here in terms of crafters who are under retirement age. Such is life in small towns! I think there is a lot more stuff for young kids on a weekend though, basically the demographic here is “parents” and “old people” and if you’re neither you’re out of luck!

At least there’s online though. I’m loving seeing all the new crafty communities popping up on here, just hope they can get enough content to keep going 🤞

You are absolutely right it does seem that more stuff is either parent or retirement age focused!

Have you found many good craft communities on the fediverse? I haven’t seen much creative content on kbin so far?

Not sure what you’re into but…deep breath…you asked for it.

!lemmy_stitch@sh.itjust.works (direct link) is a brand new one for cross stitch & embroidery, needs more people to join!

!crochet@lemmy.ca (direct link) is the most active crochet one I’ve found, some nice convos happening in there already.

!knitting@lemmy.world (direct link) again there’s a few but this seems most active.

For sewing there seem to be two trying to get off the ground but neither seem super active. I’ll probably just pick one at random and start posting in it if that doesn’t change but they’re !sewing@lemmy.world (direct link) and !sewing@sh.itjust.works (direct link)

!leathercraft@lemmy.ca (direct link) isn’t something I do personally but I do enjoy perving over their projects anyway.

Erm…if I find any more I’ll come back and update this lol. Kind of one a one-woman mission to build a good list, then hopefully convince the various mods to sticky it so people who find one of these places can then find all the others too.

(Also p.s. I don’t know how to format these links for Kbin so sorry if they don’t work. But hopefully I’ve made it a bit easier for any other Lemmings who stumble across this comment.)

Oh my god, thank you for such a comprehensive list! I will be checking out each and every one of them a little later on.

I feel like everyone really t needs to pull together and try and build all these communities to get this whole place rolling. Thriving more niche communities are vital to that.

Yep absolutely! I can’t commit to running one myself but can at least do my part by being a patient explorer (and insufferable shill) of new communities lol.

For what it’s worth, seems the bang syntax actually makes a direct link (makes people leave their instance), whereas the links you have as “direct links” (looks like /c/ syntax in the source) keep you inside your instance.

For example, here’s the Trekkie community:

                Bang (!) syntax: !startrek@startrek.website

/c/ syntax: Star Trek (written as [Star Trek](/c/startrek@startrek.website) not sure if there’s a way to autogenerate this)

Yes I know, that’s why I added both types so everyone could get there. Sorry, not sure what you’re trying to tell me here but I am very tired so that’s probably not on you! 😄

Oh, unless you’re confirming they work that way in Kbin too? In which case, awesome.

Also a bit unrelated but where are you from that ! is called a bang? Never heard that before!

Absolutely no obligations today other than to avoid getting dressed, eat snacks, and lounge around on the couch doing whatever tf I want. Which is mostly gonna be game dev and crochet, I think. Maybe a bit of sewing if I can be arsed to get off said couch and go upstairs, but that seems unlikely.

No rain due here til tomorrow night but it is at least much cooler today so I’ll take it!

The crochet is a loose-fitting black lace top to wear over other things. It’s a replacement for one I made a couple years ago then inexplicably lost, but luckily it’s quick to make 😅

The game is a very minimalist cozy city builder where the city builds itself. I’m kind of a newb and making games is a ton of work, so trying to keep my first “big” project as small as possible. Today I’ve been practising some 3d modelling skills because I want to give it a sort of solarpunk vibe but in low poly. If you’re into this sort of thing yourself we’ve got a nice little community going at !gamedev@lemmy.blahaj.zone btw! (direct link)

(The sewing would have been a skirt and bralette top but as expected I cannot be arsed today)

I promise that I don’t complain when it’s not as warm and overcast. Yes, a lot of rain it’s not great especially in the winter.

I wanted to say that before I say that I hate the summer in UK. Why? Here are the reasons:

    1. I have a really bad hayfever. That means often choosing between baking at my home or opening the windows and blowing my brains out through my nose due to the allergy.

    2. Very few places have air-con. Especially homes, meaning it’s really hot and not much can be done about it. Also, when at work, it’s annoying when it’s so hot. It’s nice when you are at the beach but this brings me to the next point.

    3. The weather is unreliable. It can be hot as fuck the whole week and then when you go to the beach it’s cold and windy.

Honestly sometimes aircon is a curse too - we bought one of those portable units, it’s great and turns our bedroom baltic but if you forget to turn it off you wake up with a really bad cotton mouth and an electric bill that makes you question your life choices

No rain here. Apparently there might be this evening or, if not, then on Tuesday or Thursday…

Hopefully, I will be picking up some garden furniture today though, so that should prompt it.

Otherwise, we have now moved in for long enough that all the things that “will do for now” are becoming a bit of a nuisance, so those are my target for today.

We have a 5 year old so naturally it’s a birthday party this weekend, should be fun though.

Woke up to rain, which is a shame as I didn’t put the patio chair cushions away last night. So much for having breakfast in the garden again. The house is still like the 10th circle of Dante’s Inferno, and one of my cats has vomited on the staircase.

Sadly, we have no rain here. The lawn remains parched.

I will be trying to find the motivation to thoroughly clean the house. Since it’s still hotter than Mount Doom in here, it’ll likely be a feeble attempt, then continuing with what is probably close to my 50th Skyrim playthrough.
