I’ve definitely been feeling the “every consumer device has been figured out already but the corporations have to keep inventing bullshit to justify their existence” vibe for the past ten years or so.
In the last 20 years, the major improvements have been:
Smartphone
Broadband speed Internet
SSD
That’s pretty much it. Everything else is minor or not actual improvements. Even going from CRTs to flatscreens isn’t as big of a leap as people would think. Sure, CRTs are bulky as fuck, but it’s not like modern flatscreens are exactly ergonomic or easy to carry. We haven’t gotten to the point where someone could trivially carry around flatscreens like a purse. CRT to flatscreen is more like many small improvements (lighter, higher resolution, not a health hazard) which combined together leads to a bigish improvement, but I wouldn’t describe going from CRT to flatscreen to be a major improvement.
OLED panels are cool
that’s basically an iPad mini (which macs can use some of the newer iPads as a display).
