Yeah, that is bullshit. For Germany at least.

I prefer self checkout too so I’m not bothered, but it’s really not a big deal.

Probably, so they work with the existing infrastructure.
Not every phone has NFC. Even from 2022.
Where I am there are no self checkouts with cash payment.
