Can I just ask, because I find it confusing, so both lemmy.zip and piefed.zip are hosted by a UK company, but lemmy.zip blocks UK IP addresses, while piefed.zip doesn’t. What is the rationale behind these decisions? I would get lemmy.zip’s UK block if it wasn’t run by a UK company, because that law is indeed bullshit, but I can’t figure out the reason for discrepancy between the two servers. (Not that I’m arguing that piefed.zip should block UK IP’s too, I rather enjoy using the site :) )

Network effect. I think most people are on Facebook because most people are on Facebook. My local groups have discussions there, local businesses share updates there.

A bunch of local groups in my area are only on Facebook, so I still visit every week or so.

Came here to mention F.B. Purity too, it’s pretty much the only thing that makes FB tolerable.

And yea, I only visit FB for some local community groups and pages, and to chat with family in Messenger. I only share articles on my profile maybe once a year, and stopped uploading photos sometime before the pandemic 😅 But sadly it’s still the most mainstream social platform in Europe.

I guess they don’t assume that their UK audience would want to travel to another country for the event.

Very disturbing, it was the last straw to switch my chats (besides family) to Signal.

I had held onto Telegram for years because of their fun animated stickers, but yesterday discovered that Signal has those too, actually all sets from Telegram are available on unofficial Signal sticker sites, so now I’m all sorted 😅

yeah, it’s reasonably good, only struggles with more niche searches - when I search for seemingly unrelated topics it often falls back to showing ~5 generic links for one of the topics, then ~5 generic links for the other, but if I search for the same with Google &udm=14, it finds the specific niche overlap I was looking for
