I don’t think you should worry overly much about it. The ranking was for Markdown support, not total app quality, and as you’ve said, the current level of Markdown support is a design decision based on available resources. You don’t need full Markdown support to be a good app, and full Markdown support doesn’t, on its own, make an app good. The ratings post is basically just the same as a benchmark, ranking things according to one specific quality while ignoring all others.
