  • I’m going to nitpick a bit but FDR was president and made the decision to go to war with Japan over pearl harbor. Truman made the final decision to drop the nuclear weapons on Japan.

Roosevelt had likely a plan since the Manhattan project was under his presidency but Truman inherited that.

I think it’s mostly accepted that the USA did not nuke Japan specifically because of pearl harbor but more to force a rapid surrender. Japan was being extremely stubborn and the estimated loss of US forces was very high to continue the war.

I also think FDR and his admin were motivated to pursue the Manhattan project in the first place due to the intel that the Nazis were also researching nuclear weapons. Nothing to do with Japan.

  • I’m not sure why you assume this but my wife and I both work in high school (grade 8 - 12) which is part of a small, fairly conservative community. Our administrative staff all the way up to superintendent are extremely supportive of these types of things. Inclusion and awareness is very important at our high school for everyone. We also have social media education introduced in multiple classes. About 3/4 of all staff are female and neither of us have witnessed this type of misogynistic behavior. Our struggle is racism, antisemitism and intolerance.

I’m not saying that misogyny isn’t a problem, I experience it on instagram and YouTube all the time and the comment sections are insane. My point is that administration does care, we are encouraged to include this type of education in our curriculum and we talk about it during staff meetings.

  • Nice write-up. I thought I had a large library (24TB) and my off site backup is starting to get full. I backup everything though but I have long debated on if there’s a point of keeping movies and TV since they’ll likely always be available. Anyway, I never thought of generating a list of files and eliminating the stuff that’s not particularly important. Good idea.

  • The website this article uses (https://www.bankingonclimatechaos.org/) is extremely interesting and holds a lot of data.

Looking at Enbridge as an example it reports that a total of $86b was invested from banks between 2021 and 2024. The info that I cannot find is how much Enbridge invests into infrastructure like transmission lines or how much of that $86b went towards renewables. Enbridge has “commited” to Net-Zero by 2050.

I am 100% for transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy and getting Canada into energy independence. It’s going to take time and money and professionals. Companies like Enbridge aren’t going to stop producing carbon, but I think they are going to be the ones that make the biggest steps towards getting us there.
