Ro wasn’t an impact player in Chicago. Dude was only making plays downfield unlike someone like Briggs who lived making TFL.

If people think that TJ Edwards is comparable to Roquan Smith, there’s nothing anyone can do to help them lol edwards is fine but come the fuck on

Difference is roquan is the 2nd best coverage LB in the game and edwards is closer to the 2nd worst. He’s kwiatkoski; very smart player with high motor and feel for the game but too slow and unathletic to be a game wrecker. He’s a good piece but let’s not act like he’s a fraction of roquan

Imagine Ro playing next to TJ in our team.

Look, I was up for trading Ro purely because we were in a rebuild, but to go out and replace him with someone who’s far inferior, just to save $2m/year, creates a whole new argument.

If we were gonna pay for a MLB, we should have kept Ro.

Coping? No. Only pointing out that Poles has made decent moves despite the doomers fetish for hating on their favorite team.

Dude, look at this franchise. I hope Poles ultimately turns things around but it’s absolutely fair to be critical of these moves. This team sucks but so many people on here simp so hard for it.

    • Roquan is great
    • He wouldn’t look like an impact player here because we wouldn’t be using him as smartly as Baltimore is
    • The Roquan trade was fine considering the circumstances
    • The Edmunds signing was probably a mistake, but it’s not like it was completely illogical to go after an atypically young free agent who ostensibly “fit the system” of your head coach, who previously coached arguably the most valuable off-ball linebacker in the league
    • It’s silly to complain about the AAV of the Edmunds signing without also acknowledging that it was structured in a way that we could easily get out of it after the 2024 season, which is full two seasons earlier than Roquan’s contract allows for
    • Edmunds is probably suffering to at least some degree from the same problems that made Roquan look pedestrian under Eberflus
    • The Edwards signing was real good
    • Eberflus’s defensive system stinks and we need to replace him with someone who has a more dynamic and/or adaptable philosophy so we can maximize the skills of the players we have rather than hunting for The Perfect Fit at every position

There, I think that should cover all the angles of the Roquan Smith conversation. Now we never need to have it ever again

20 mil a season compared to 18 mil a season is not a third of the cost, especially when one has consistently been ranked as the top LB in the league while also being excellent in pass coverage and far more athletic than Edwards. The fact remains Roquan was a needle mover Edwards is not and we saved 2mil. This is one of the biggest L’s poles has taken here and he’s taken a lot, like more than any other GM in the league right now and he’s about to take another with Johnson. Poles fucking blows

I think Roquan is a significantly better player, particularly in coverage. Coverage skills in a linebacker are becoming more and more important over time as the league focuses more on passing and more teams look for pass catching tight ends as matchup problems. Having a guy who can match up reasonably well against a Kelce is nice to have.

You are aware that his coverage has been pretty terrible this year…QBs are completing 75% of their passes against him.
