Yikes. We see £1100 for two. That’s $1300 equivalent I think? Basically, twice the price in 🇬🇧 :(
Is that a consequence of brexit or something else that predates it?
As much as I’d like to blame Brexit I don’t think it’s really the case here either.
No, WD drives are just more expensive in europe
(The price on the european websites already includes VAT, don’t know if thats the case for the US website)
Yes, US prices all include the 0% VAT we have here.
US websites never include sales tax, because it varies by state and even municipality within a state. It can be 0%, it can be 8%.
Is it just WD or most tech things in general? Is it all about taxes? Forgive my ignorance I’ve never shopped abroad outside of touristy stuff.
In this case i was talking about WD specifically
Their website prices are virtually the same in the different versions of their european websites
for the 20TB red pro:
-
622 eur in germany
-
627 eur in france
-
556 pounds in the UK, which is 638 eur at the current exchange rate
So brexit doesn’t seem to have an impact here, its just that WD sells at much higher prices in europe compared to the US
In general, hardware does tend to be a little bit more expensive in europe, but not by this much. WD seems to take it to a whole other level.

Yeah, even on offer they’re still like £780 for 2. If they were priced like the US I’d have bought them.
You know you can only move data 300TB/yr that counts maintenance HDD does automatically downloaded files, wrote files, and if you read some file 100 times it counts against you. No wonder their SSD division is falling out to pieces, a company shouldn’t be anti-consumer like WD and blatantly does whatever they want. Some hard core NAS user said he can go though 300TB in 2 weeks then he is out of warranty completely and forever.
You are warned.
I usually stay away from the WD Red Pro drives now.
That has been resolved. That warning can be disabled.
Just disable WDDA.
sudo synosetkeyvalue /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf support_wdda no
“fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
Imo, good deal but there will be better ones coming so I’m going to wait.
Better as in larger capacity?
Better deals, cheaper price per TB
It’s cheaper than what you could shuck Easystores or Elements for.
Right now, sure, otherwise we’ve had the Easystore for 309.99 last year so it’ll probably come this year too, maybe even under 300.
The 20TB easystores got down to $280 about 3 weeks ago… The only reason I didn’t buy at that time was I’m hoping for a similar-in-comparison price drop for the 22TB.
The 20TB easystores got down to $280 about 3 weeks ago
I would rather buy a 20TB Red Pro with 5 years warranty for $300 dollars, than a 20TB easystore for $280 that loses its warranty when shucked
At some point penny pinching just isn’t worth it
Also, i have a shucked 18TB easystore and its much louder than my 16TB red pros
Get the Keepa PC add-on / extension or cell app. It’ll show you the lowest price for the product & you can track it. Check out the price for the 22TB not long ago. That’s the best $/TB for a new drive that I’ve seen & I picked up 2 of those. The Camelizer or “CamelCamelCamel” may be another app option.
