Fun fact. If trash pickup stopped in your town for a month, people would go apeshit. If police stopped working for a month in the same town, most people (90%+) wouldn’t even notice a difference

Too expensive in my area. (Seriously, $95/mo for the smallest can, and recycling costs extra!? Fuck off with that shit.)
Some of my trash gets burned in the wood stove – free heat. Some can be fed to the chickens. The rest gets tossed in an old trailer that I drive to the dump myself 2 or 3 times a year. (We don’t generate very much trash in our household in the first place.) For me, nothing much would change. I guess, presumably, if the trash pickup workers were on strike, the dump workers might also be. If the strike went on long enough that my trailer was getting overfilled, I guess I’d have to find somewhere else to dump it.
If cops stopped, people would notice as there would be less deaths and assaults by them.
In Dinotopia the streets were kept clean by men with copro carts. They wore the finest silks with rare purple dye, and were treated like celebrities and royalty for the vital work they did.
I want to live there just for that.

I have an extremely well-loved copy that I read as a kid and my own kids read as well. It’s a beautiful book.

Truth. This is a big reason why my city switched to an automated bin system. The refuse collectors just drive the truck and operate the mechanical arm. It’s only slightly inconvenient for us residents, because they won’t collect anything that’s not in the bin, but it’s saved the city a lot of money in worker’s comp claims. Totally worth it.
