I wish there were sources for such “said a former senior US official” statements.

In any case, it's nice to be treated like the client states that we've become, isn't it?

A client state in the context of international relations is a state that is economically, politically, and militarily subordinated to a more powerful controlling state. Alternative terms for a client state are satellite state, associated state, and dominion, condominium, self-governing colony, and neo-colony, protectorate, vassal state, puppet state, and tributary state.
