- I will do so much stuff.
- Later I’ll do lots of stuff.
- Eventually, I’ll do some stuff.
- Baldur’s Gate.
- Ah fuck it’s morning already?
- [Zombie at work] I need a day off.
If your goal is to chill on your day off, then you won’t feel bad all through the day for lazing about. You have to use reverse psychology in order to enjoy time off.
The 4 stages of a day off;
- Identify day off. (It’ll be Wednesday!)
- Identify all the shit you need done before the next following workday (laundry, meal prep, shopping)
- Get all that shit done between now and then (looks like I’m shopping Monday afternoon, meal prepping Monday night, hitting “start” on laundry Tuesday afternoon after getting home and throwing work clothes in)
- Day off!
This post brought to you by treating my ADHD with prescribed stimulant medication (and my refusal to take it on days off, even if that means I sleep all day because I’m all unfocused).
I’ve learned long ago I need one do-nothing day a week. Bible was on to something.
Get yourself someone who tells you that you deserve a break.
Today is my day off. It is noon and I’m at number 2.
My wife actually does things on her days off. It really doesn’t mesh with my desire to just relax.
The sun is going to burn out one day, and we will destroy ourselves far before that, likely within the next century!
Do as much or as little as you want to do.
It’s thrown around often, but few to no one, at least here in the US, truly appreciate and internalize that nothing really matters. If happiness is actually your goal, stop letting other people shame you into hustling. I genuinely pity A types, a bunch of hamsters on a wheel.
The four stages of life
I’ve fallen into this habit way too launch on weekends. It’s been too long since I got anything done and the chores are piling up.
I do have a couple partial excuses though, that at least shows my priorities right:
- My younger kid keeps wanting to do all day activities with me. He’s going into his senior year in high school so this is the last few precious moments before he leaves the nest
- I got a smoker! Whether it’s for my kids memories or just my own skill/hobby, I might spend an entire Saturday making dinner. It’s not just the slow cooking, but every side and the dessert are both more ambitious and go on the smoker. For example: for the next meal I have a macaroni salad recipe that starts with : “warm up the smoker and preheat a cast iron skillet…”
Meanwhile my autistic ass wakes up at six and then proceeds to spend the whole day coding something useless or tinkering with my Linux setup until it’s perfect. Which feels great but also like… where did my day go?
For the first time in a while, this hasn’t been me! Small victories.
Well done!!! Any tips?
Honestly? A really good therapist, reading some very interesting books, and prioritising building a community & finding my people.
Thanks for the podcast rec! I cued it to listen to tomorrow. I’ve been through some really great therapy, and definitely have an easier time not procrastinating when I’m doing well. You gave me lots to think about, thank you.
Days are shorter than you think.
I bail at step 3 with “I’ll do all that stuff next weekend.”
