The GOP Twitter account tweeted, then deleted an image in celebration of U.S. Independence Day that appeared to erroneously feature the Liberian flag.

    This is made all the more hilarious by the fact that Liberia declared its independence from… the US.

    EDIT: small correction as independence was technically declared from the private “American Colonization Society” which is somehow even worse

      Ehhh. The US granted it independence.

      EDIT: No, I guess not. It was never a US territory. I thought that it was a state initiative, but apparently it was a private one.

      It is unclear whether or not Liberia was ever technically a colony at all. Unlike most other colonies in the 19th century, it had no charter and had no official allegiance or relationship with a sovereign nation.

      I know that Lincoln supported the idea, but it looks like it was in the context of supporting a private initiative.
