Hi everyone, I want to install WeChat on Windows, but I’m concerned about privacy and potential surveillance associated with the app. I only need it to communicate with someone who exclusively uses WeChat, so my goal is to isolate or sandbox it as much as possible to prevent it from accessing my main system, collecting unnecessary data, or causing any harm to my OS.
What are the best ways to jail or restrict WeChat on Windows? I know about using virtual machines (VirtualBox/VMware), Windows Sandbox, or a separate Windows user account, but I’m not sure which offers the best balance between security and usability. Is running the official WeChat client inside a VM or Windows Sandbox the safest option, and has anyone here tried this setup successfully?

A VM is a good start if you’re looking at obfuscating system information, but you’ll still need a network connection which will most readily be accomplished through a bridged connection to your computer. You’ll probably want a VPN for that and then ensure you only use that VM when the VPN is on. Without compromising usability you’ll probably just want to focus on operational security here and only use that VM for WeChat.
